7/10/2008 - The Style Of No Style.....- By Phillip C. Hayes, Webmaster
Virtually 1 1/2 years has passed, life seems to have put us all on the fast-track, before you know it, my voice has been silent for 19 LOOOOOOOOOOOONG months! I know for many of you, that's a blessing (ha ha) but in all seriousness, I'm sorry I haven't been able to do more on this Commentary page. So I will throw in some random thoughts, just to stir the pot, as only "The Fabulous One" can:
- Michael Hayes and his racist rant on Mark Henry of the WWE: I suppose I'm surprised...........and yet simultaneously, NOT surprised. The Freebirds made their name draped in the Rebel Yell flag, so to say that that mindset came out during a drunken rant? Not surprising. I'm surprised because I thought Michael P.S. Hayes was better than that, but again, when you beat the Von Erichs in a 6-man Title Match, coming to the ring with guys dressed as Confederate soldiers while the Sportatorium speakers are blaring 'Free Bird' by Lynyrd Skynyrd (note: that was the match where Kevin Von Erich said 'this isn't a war between Texas and Georgia, this is a war between decency and filth........how's that for my memory?) Again, I'm not surprised. What got me was that bullsh*t excuse the WWE gave in keeping him on payroll! Think I'm kidding? Go to your job and say something racist towards a fellow employee, and see if YOU don't get the pink slip.....Now mind you, that's not to say Michael Hayes hasn't done a lot for pro wrestling, or that he doesn't deserve a second chance, or that he's even a bad guy, I'm sure he's probably ok, but still, it's another in a long line of WWE's 'what were you thinking'.........oh well, not surprised again, this is the same wrestling company that takes African-American wrestlers and turns them into stereotypical caricatures (anybody remember Flash Funk, The Soul Patrol, The Nation of Domination, K-Kwik, The Godfather with the 'Ho' Train - need I go on?)...........And don't even get me started on what they do to Samoans.
- Triumph & Tragedy 2-DVD Set: Speaking of those corporate monks in Stamford, CT, I actually have something nice to say about the treatment to the Triumph/Tragedy DVD set. I was pleasantly amazed (and coming from WWE, that says something) about the dignity in which they showed the history of our beloved federation, World Class Championship Wrestling. Everything seemed to flow naturally with the way we all remember it. Unfortunately, it was too short for many of our tastes, but in a rare defense for the WWE, I don't think 10 hours would have been enough to cover everything as we remember it. I've seen a lot of posts, especially on the Kayfabe Memories site about how the match selection wasn't perfect. Let's face it: we all have our favorites and frankly, we never would have gotten enough of them anyway on DVD, so again, a rare defense of the WWE (I must be coming down with something......defending the WWE? Hope it's not contagious..............) I suppose the only problem I have (2, that is): 1) why put the Fantastics on the match list? You couldn't find anything with the Super Destroyers, Maniac Mark Lewin, hell, even PY Chu Hi or 'Hollywood' John Tatum and Jack Victory? ANYBODY but the Fantastics! And 2) as noted by millions more than just me, why is Triple H in EVERY DAG GONE VIDEO THE WWE DOES? Couldn't be because he's tripshtupin' the boss' daughter, ya think? Flair, Foley, Bill Irwin, Michael Hayes, Buddy Roberts, Jimmy Garvin - they were all there during that time. Triple H was bummin' gas to cut junior high school when these guys were on TOP in Dallas wrestling! And furthermore, check this out, he had NERVE enough to say (and I kid you not): 'the moral of the story is: don't do drugs'. Well, try this on, Triple H: make sure you tell your washed-out best friend Scott Hall that, that guy hasn't been sober 10 hours over the last 14 years. And don't forget to tell your other buddy, Sean "1-2-3 Kid/Syxx-Pac" Waltman that as well, he tried to kill himself earlier this year because he was so doped up; this guy was high as the sky and thought he was Superman. Don't do drugs, Triple H? Mow your own lawn before you mow your neighbor's.
- Kevin Von Erich: I understand he finally moved to Hawaii and he and his family are living the life and enjoying themselves. Great for them. Again, I can't say enough positive things about Kevin, even though I don't know him, you have to respect the family of the Von Erichs. Perhaps not some of the choices they made, but let's face it: without Fritz' worldly vision, there would be no us, no loyal fans who had something to watch and look forward to each week in and week out. Kevin's son-in-law Joe Nikolas was kind enough to add our site to the Links on the VonErich.com website, so a shout out to Kevin and Joe both!! Get plenty of sun and have a Blue Hawaii for me! The way my week's been, I might end up having more than a few for both of y'all!!
- The late (sad to say) "Playboy" Gary Hart: To say that pro wrestling lost a true legend when Gary Hart passed doesn't say enough about the word 'legend'. Gary Hart lived his entire life in this business that we love so much. From starting with Don "The Spoiler" Jardine, to his expertise taking him across this country and around the world, the name 'Gary Hart' was synonymous with excellence. Everything Gary Hart touched turned to gold. World Class may not have been the 'World Class' we remember it as without the cunning and vision and talent that was Gary Hart. If you haven't seen his Shoot Interview, it is a story to be told, by one of the Masters of Professional Wrestling. There's so much you could learn, there's so much I learned and I thought I knew about all there was to know about him, history-wise. His passing shocked ALL of us. Gary Hart, in a business full of cutthroats, snakes and bullsh*t artists, was pure class. He could have taken the money from WWE and ran with it, but he knew that legacy was more important than laughingstock, that respect was more important than profit. Mr. Gary Hart, I and many other fans of pro wrestling salute you and the legacy that you leave behind. Say hello to Chris, Gino, and all of our friends that we've lost along this journey. I know he's up there in Heaven right now, at ringside managing a match with Chris Adams..........and pulling that loaded sock out of his suit jacket pocket.
I called this 'The Style of No Style' to quote a philosophy of the late Bruce Lee: the martial arts style of having no style: not being limited by the confines of one school of thought or discipline of martial arts, being fluid with motion and being active-reactive. I started out saying to myself, ok, I always sound like I'm preaching on these commentaries, this time, I'm gonna get off my soapbox; I'm gonna do something different. I'm not gonna say anything on that level...............like I said, that's what I said when I started.........................
In the spirit of the 1-2 count, I'm going to leave you with 8 simple words that, if you remember nothing else, remember these:
Cherish FAMILY. Cherish WRESTLING. Be BLESSED. Be WELL.
Enjoy the rest of the site!!
