Is Gunther The Greatest WWE Intercontinental Champion of All Time?

Who is the greatest WWE Intercontinental Champion of all time? Gunther has been making his case as of late. He continued to do that when he retained over Xavier Woods on this week’s Smackdown. Professional wrestling fans often debate who should be considered the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time. The title has been held by some of the biggest names in the business, including The Miz, Chris Jericho, Randy Savage, Honky Tonk Man, and more recently, Gunther.

While Gunther's reign is more recent, should not be overlooked. He’s brought a unique style and energy to the title that will always be remembered by fans. He’s had the memorable matches against Sheamus and Drew McIntyre. And he’s overall enjoyed an extremely strong reign. Being booked as the clear cut class of the upper-midcard.

I think he has a while to go to be considered the greatest. I think that belongs to Macho Man Randy Savage. He has one of the most memorable matches at Wrestlemania ever and it involved the Title. It also helped elevate him to the main event which is exactly what the Intercontinental should do. If that’s what happens with Gunther it may push him above Savage.

For that reason, the longest reigning single Intercontinental Champion, Honky Tonk Man isn’t the greatest Champion of all time. While he had the longest Title reign, it wouldn’t materialize much past that. The gimmick could only go so far and wasn’t a main event act. The Intercontinental Championship couldn’t help that. It did help wrestlers like Chris Jericho who should be considered. As well as Bret Hart. Honky Tonk Man isn’t in that class in my opinion.

While the late Randy Savage may stand above the rest, Gunther's time as Intercontinental Champion is certainly worthy of being considered among the greatest. Will it end up being the greatest Intercontinental Title reign of all time?

You tell me.

Book This Episode 1: The Summer of Punk Rebooked Prelude

Let’s go back to 2011, specifically June of 2011. CM Punk’s contract is expiring soon and he’s getting ready to have the biggest run of his career. On June 27th, 2011 CM Punk would cut a promo that would have the wrestling world buzzing for years to come. In his promo, Punk said that his contract expired next month and that he, the Number One Contender, would be leaving  WWE with the WWE Championship. He’d also go onto take shots at not only his opponent the following month, John Cena but other icons in the history of WWE. Whether employed by the company or not. He’d also tease defending his WWE Championship in Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Essentially he’d be a travelling World Champion, ala the territory days. Well, CM Punk did win the WWE Championship the next month from John Cena at Money in the Bank. However, what would happen after would disappoint wrestling fans more than anything else that’s happened in years.       How they bungled this storyline, I’m not ent

The State of Professional Wrestling - 11-29-21

I have a lot of thoughts on the state of professional wrestling in 2021. I think it’s great that AEW is around now and that they’re presenting a great product. I think WWE has the potential not be really boring but I think the consensus is that most of the time it’s just a really boring show. I cannot tell you the last time I sat through a 3 hour Raw. Oh wait, yes I can. September, 9th, 2013 and that’s only because I was at the damn show.       WWE has a problem with stagnation. The product continually feels the same and I think there’s an obvious reason for that. WWE is too scripted. I think there’s a noticeable difference in the presentation between WWE and AEW. AEW feels like a legitimate sports show and WWE feels like broadway theatre without the music. I don’t think it’s a problem with the talent. When you go top-down, guys like Roman Reigns, Big E, Brock Lesnar, Edge, Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, Finn Balor, Jeff Hardy and Kevin Owens are all main event players.

Several AEW Releases Reported

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported on Monday that announcer Dasha Kuret, Stu Grayson, Jose the Assistant, Jora Johl, Gravity, Slim J, and Parker Boudreaux have been cut from the roster. PWInsider additionally reported that The Boys (Brandon and Brent Tate) and Anthony Henry have also been released.   We have word on several All Elite Wrestling releases. On Monday, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported Dasha Kuret, Stu Grayson, Jose the Assistant, Jora Johl, Gravity, Slim J and Parker Boudreaux have been released.  In addition to Sean’s announcements, PWInsider reported the release of The Boys (Brandon and Brent Tate) and Anthony Henry. PWInsider also notes that AEW is "evaluating their talent roster and making cuts to benefit both the company and the talents."  This is the second time Stu Grayson has been released from the company. Maybe the third time in the future will be the charm.  I wonder what happens to Parker Boudreaux. He has the look of a future World Heavyweight Cha
