There was an edict from Vince McMahon in April that he no longer wanted wrestlers using their real first names or names they’ve previously used. On the extreme end we saw Walter change to Gunther, Pete Dunne turn into Butch and Raul Mendoza become Cruz Del Tora. The other end of the spectrum saw Austin Theory drop the Austin, Matt Riddle become a master of rhymes, losing his name and Seth Rollins became Seth “Freakin” Rollins.
Vince McMahon no longer heads WWE creative. Triple H has taken over the reigns since McMahon stepped down. We’re already seeing monumental changes in the company and it feels like they have the most momentum behind them since the Covid 19 pandemic began. We’ve seen better matches, returns to the companies and now those first names are coming back.
Riddle is back to being Matt Riddle, Theory is back to Austin Theory and the latest change is Ciampa is now Tomasso Ciampa once again. I kept calling these guys by their first names in my videos and my content, so I’m happy about it. I thought it was a lame change by McMahon to begin with. Wrestling as at its best when the performers are credible and real. Giving them proper names helps with that.
Hopefully we’ll see Nikki Cross drop her superhero gimmick and Doudrop go back to being Piper Niven. Check out the link the podcast here and the rest of the links here.
